Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering, analysing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgements to improve future student learning.

At Kariong Mountains High School, teachers use assessment strategies to inform their practice and engage in dialogue with students and their parents about student progress. Assessments are designed to measure achievement of outcomes using a range of learning styles and therefore vary in terms of type, skills requirements and length.

Assessments occur throughout the course of the year with no set examination periods in Stage 4. We provide detailed information to students about what is expected from them throughout the school year and how their work will be assessed. Parents can access further detailed information from the parent portal.

Reporting

A written report using the grade scale is sent home usually near the end of Term 2 and Term 4, to give you a clear picture of your child’s achievements.

Teachers observe students' work in class and look closely at tasks throughout the year. They also formally assess a student's achievement based on the outcomes described in the syllabus of the subject.

As a parent or carer, you’ll receive a written report twice a year. It gives you a clear picture of your child’s achievements – what they know and can do.

In Years 7 to 10, we use the common grade scale in reporting. Additional information for Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) is available on the the NSW curriculum website.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are assessed on achievement of competencies.
