Stage 4 Academic Stream
Developing a deeper understanding of concepts, real-world problem solving, alongside growing essential skills for future careers, to extend and enrich students’ learning journey.
We believe that offering an Academic Stream Selective class, tailored for high potential and gifted students in the intellectual domain, will provide them with the opportunity to achieve their educational potential by optimising growth and achievement through talent development.
Class structure
Students commencing Year 7 in the Academic Stream will typically continue in this class through to the end of Year 8.
We use evidence-based talent development strategies, such as deep-learning opportunities, task extension and learning enrichment, along with support to develop critical and creative thinking skills, which all help students immerse themselves in their work.
Students will be encouraged to participate in a variety of opportunities, for example:
- Academic competitions and challenges
- Debating and leadership
- Accelerated courses (highly gifted students only)
- Project-based Learning
- Performance exhibitions
- Individualised pathways
Target students
The Academic Stream is for academically motivated students, who are keen to extend their learning beyond the mandatory curriculum and challenge themselves and their peers to strive for personal excellence. Students who would benefit from this class are those who:
- are academically motivated
- currently achieving strongly in particular areas or subjects
- thrive in a creative and rigorous learning environment
- have a positive and persistent approach to their studies
- demonstrate resilience when faced with learning challenges
- have been recommended by a current teacher, who has identified the student to have high potential in one or more academic areas.
